"A-ha" moment: The difference between CS and CM
I’ve tried to provide an example of Content Strategy with data from outside of Marketing, but what you say is correct. Quite often we see new terms spring up and there’s this massive media push to try to get them established as concepts. But when you look deeper, many are just a rehash of old ideas. Perhaps we’ve reached “peak innovation”…
Think “Cloud”. Conceptually, when your computing power is in the cloud, isn’t that like a massively scaled-up version of what the mainframe concept was? From a technology perspective, they might seem light years apart, but conceptually they look somewhat similar.
I’ve often thought the 90’s were the decade of productivity increases which reached a frenzied peak in 2000. I think what we’re witnessing now is the physical manifestation of the many visions and ideas from that period. We now have Gen Y grasping a concept, running with it, and actually making money this time around. It was too early in 2000. The ideas were ahead of the technology.
Couple the concept of peak innovation with a possible peak in how much money can still be “wrung out of the system” through outsourcing/offshoring…and one is left wondering…what next?
I am actually very optimistic about the new wave of innovation in the ultra-complex worlds of biotech and nanotech. Biotech has been on a tear for some time now—preceeding the Bernanke stimulus by many months. There’s also work to be done in the area of organizational innovation. Management hasn’t changed in decades…perhaps over 100 years, as managment guru Gary Hamel notes.
Yep, plenty of work still to be done…but circling back to Content Strategy (at last), the more we get to see the bigger picture of what it really means for firms of all sizes, the better in my view.
