What exactly is "Strategy"?
How can anyone be wrong who makes a living in this industry? I would certainly like to better understand where you’re coming from. Of particular interest to me is why you feel somewhat disappointed (assuming I have identified your sentiment correctly).
Many would argue that the course material is of excellent quality and presented by some of the most knowledgeable people in the world. That aside, you stressed the word “strategy”. I too had difficulty understanding why the word strategy is used when most of us understand it to be a type of plan.
During our fascinating debates over definition in several threads, I started to question my preconceptions about strategy in general. I had to check Merriam Webster. Sure enough I found what I was looking for: ”careful plan or method for achieving a particular goal usually over a long period of time”. However, on closer inspection, the expanded definition of strategy was defined as ”a variety of or instance of the use of strategy” and ”an adaptation or complex of adaptations that serves or appears to serve an important function in achieving evolutionary success.”
What I found was that the expanded definition made far more sense to me in the context of this course, which I feel focuses not on the creation of strategy per se, but the instances of its use, or put another way the application and adaptation of strategy rather than the definition of strategy.
Would it be fair to say that your expectations were leaning towards strategy creation more than instances of the use of strategy?
If the course had been titled ”Applying Content Strategy for Professionals: Engaging Audiences for Your Organization”, would you be feeling any different about it at this stage? But isn’t that elongated title a little too awkward? Doesn’t the expanded definition of strategy mean that this course is appropriately named?
In reality, I think there is more evangelizing to be done for Content Strategy, but that’s a good thing — the early days are the most exciting!
I’m interested in your views on expectation setting — I think it’s important for the Content we create.
