"A-ha" moment: The difference between CS and CM
Good to see a comment from a former salesperson. One of the better bosses I’ve been fortunate to work with told me once that selling puts you in good stead for a career in marketing. So true, I believe. You understand better than virtually anyone what it takes to make and keep happy customers. I think we are still in the early days of a transition from sales to marketing as the creator and driver of growth. There are signs that traditional sales teams are struggling. Think IBM’s and Oracle’s recent quarters. When marketing is done right, customer relationships are nurtured and sales have the potential to unfold organically, in which case many of the “desperate” sales tactics you speak of will no longer be required. As we look forward, there is a bright future ahead for the Content industry to change the dynamic and create a new era — the dawn of Content Strategy.
