Does typography significantly impact tone and voices?
It’s remarkably subjective…and quite fascinating how something so simple can have a big perceived impact. When I use a reading app on my tablet that allows font, size and margin adjustments, it takes me ages to find the ‘right’ one. The next day, I change my mind. I will tell you what I have found that makes some sense though. I find sans-serif fonts on webpages and mobile devices look cleaner and, well, they ‘beautify’ the page. However, serif fonts are easier to read faster. Someone once told me that the reason serif fonts like Times New Roman were so popular for printed books and newspapers was that the serifs have the effect of joining the letters together so that your eye connects the letters into a kind of chain that is faster for your brain to resolve into words. What I find interesting is that if I have to do a lot of reading, it sometimes helps to choose a ‘handwriting’ style of font which does physically join the letters. I’m sure you know all this, but it’s nice to discuss things like this in this forum. :)
Interesting post.
