- “but couldn’t place who it was till I saw this thread” - Sarah, this happened to me too. Although I have seen the movie several times and like Robin Williams, I had to look it up. The voice sounded to me like Baz Luhrmann of ’Wear Sunscreen" fame.
- To answer your question directly Janice, I did find the video effective. I was so surprised to discover the voice was Robin Williams that I had to check the movie clip to confirm. Identical. Here’s what’s interesting to me: was it the iPad video content that touched me and gave me ‘goose bumps’, or was it a subconscious recollection of the feeling I had at the time I saw the original movie? The voice may have triggered a subconscious recall of that feeling, which I only considered a possibility after watching the original movie clip again.
- "I’d be too scared to drop it," - another interesting observation Sarah. It suggests you may have felt so connected with the message of the video that you felt a sense of ownership, as though you might drop your iPad.
- If you’re interested, dear reader, I recommend you watch the iPad movie, then the Robin Williams clip one after the other. Watch for the difference that facial expressions, hand gestures and student reactions make to the way you feel, but keep in mind that knowing the story of Dead Poet’s Society up to that point helps connect with the characters.
- Conclusion: people who watched the original movie may have a stronger connection with the ad. Is that a deliberate move by Apple? GenY’s are already committed fans. Apple could grow its share of the Boomer cohort, most of whom will have watched the full movie. It’s a smart move to ‘kill two birds with one stone’.
