Most firms have approached web design with a ‘Desktop Down’ methodology. Yet mobile devices are now ubiquitous — there are some 6.8 billion mobile subscribers.
Do you think firms should reverse this method and lead with Mobile?
I contend that with the astonishing progress of voice-controlled mobile-device interfaces like Siri and Google Now, ‘natural language’ will become the preferred search method. This brings a whole new level of complexity to optimizing websites for natural language searches. Not only that, Google has designed Hummingbird to ‘differentiate’ high-value content from ‘low-value’ junk (irrelevant nonsense filled with keywords). This is music to the ears of Content Strategists, but tough on small business since it requires more effort, more money, more time to create and maintain relevant, fresh content. In which case, I ask — is it viable for small businesses to consider mobile as their primary or only platform.
NB: Think small business. Think John’s 3 truths. Think how difficult it is for small businesses to be found on Google anyway. So why bother with maintaining a full-scale web presence when mobile aggregators, social and even simple apps would be more cost effective.
[upgrade or downgrade or leave alone - it’s up to you, but it would be more valuable to the class if you stated your position.]
