People > Pinterest > Tumblr > Your website > Join the discussion??

When people build boards in earnest around their passions and interests, it’s a beautiful, neat ‘snapshot’ of their psychographic profile. In my opinion, when they IPO and commercialize the site, it will be easy for marketers to segment and target messages to these profiles.
Currently there are a lot of boards building enormous followerships based on pretty pictures and using the reciprocity rule, i.e. if I follow you, will you follow me. There’s not much value in that because although large, the followerships were not built organically based on interests and passions. But once Pinterest becomes more established and the true Pinterest addicts predominate, then wow! what a goldmine.
The most popular boards currently seem to be the visually appealing ones, but one can imagine that going forward, it will make a good platform for aggregating article topics to build an authority reputation. There’s a limited amount of text allowed per pin, but that’s fine — people just want to scan headlines then dive deeper into what interests them.
