"Horses for Courses"

I appreciate some of the forum and video index links mentioned above are difficult to locate. If the ‘forums link was renamed from ‘Weekly Discussion Postings’ to ‘Discussion Forums’ or even ‘Forums’, I think it might aid clarity.

  • This menu link gets you to the full list of videos with check marks indicating completion progress.

  • This forum link is meant for technical feedback (found near bottom of forum list).

  • This forum link is meant for course material feedback (found near bottom of forum list).

  • This forum link is meant for lecture-specific feedback (found near bottom of forum list).

Videos:
The default viewing interface for videos differs from other Coursera classes. I think the logic is to group videos neatly into weekly topics within an attractive interface. Video completion is not indicated, but is available under the left-hand menu link “Video Lecture Index”.
A single mouse click skips over the video intros on desktop/laptop browsers with HTML5 video. This does not apply to mobile browsers. I sent a forum request for participation in a brief survey. Although there were only 13 respondents, the data does suggest the most commonly used platform is Laptop/Desktop with adjustable video speed. Most respondents indicated either that the course definition of Content Strategy was as they had expected, or that it was a new subject for them.
Respondents indicated use of several platforms, suggesting different platforms are used for the course throughout the day. I fit into this category — smartphone while commuting, tablet in cafes, and laptop at home.

Forums:
The forums have challenged me to think creatively, pushed me to justify my position, driven me to provide and evolve content that people might find useful. They have given me the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of content professionals and provided a real time view of the content topics people care about.

Value:

Personally, I find the value:time ratio is very high. I could simply read a long list of books, for example, I have “Content Rules” by Anne Handley (CCO of MktgProfs) and will probably purchase the recommended books. However, I prefer visual learning and ‘learning by doing’, so the video/forum format works well for me. Northwestern has world-renowned credibility. That’s valuable to me. The book was $19.95 but the course is $0. The value proposition is of staggering proportions.
